The good and bad about artificial intelligence in cybersecurity

From how we live, work, and play, artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming nearly every aspect of our lives, including how we approach cybersecurity. For security teams, AI not only holds the promise of developing far more advanced and smarter cybersecurity solutions in the near future but today enables the development of intelligent systems so that organizations can quickly detect and respond to cyber threats.

Learn from our threat intelligence experts how AI changes the cybersecurity landscape for threat actors and organizations.

However, with the good comes the bad. AI is creating new opportunities for threat groups who can use tools like ChatGPT to improve phishing emails and make their messages more authentic. Security leaders are rightfully concerned. According to a recent survey of 1,500 IT professionals, 74% of respondents believe that ChatGPT poses a potential cybersecurity threat, 53% stated that ChatGPT’s ability to help attackers create legitimate-sounding phishing emails is a global concern, and 51% believe that within the year, there will be a successful cyberattack credited to ChatGPT. Without question, security teams are facing increasingly significant challenges in taking proactive cybersecurity measures.

In our report on 2023 trends, Cybersixgill’s threat intelligence experts shared their insights into how AI is changing cybersecurity for both sides. This year and looking ahead, they believe that AI will play an increasingly important role in the cyberwar battlefield in the following key ways:

Threat actors are using AI for an advanced ‘credential stuffing’ attack, in which they can recognize patterns in passwords to generate password guesses for different systems. To respond to the escalation by threat actors and criminals using malicious AI, the government and enterprise organizations will need to use NLP and AI to move to proactive cybersecurity and move away from a reliance on past reactive approaches.

Automation using AI will play an essential role in proactive cybersecurity by enabling the detection of real threats and building defenses. Combining automation, advanced analytics, and rich vulnerability to exploit intelligence addresses all Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) phases.

New and emerging AI technologies will embolden threat groups, and cyberattacks will flourish. As these tools become more sophisticated, the potential for threat groups to use them for malicious purposes will only increase.
