Cybersecurity Tips and Best Practices to Celebrate Cybersecurity Awareness Month
October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and this year’s theme is “See Yourself in Cyber” to bring recognition to the fact that cybersecurity, while complex, is about people. To celebrate, each week throughout the month we will introduce one of our cybersecurity experts. Our featured expert will provide tips and best practices that you can easily implement and share with your friends, family, and colleagues. Together, we can all make smarter decisions about cybersecurity to protect ourselves from an attack.
To kick off our series, Ilana Touboul, a Cyber Threat Intelligence Analyst, shares tips on how to protect your online accounts and personal information. Ilana is part of Cybersixgill’s Intelligence Services team and works closely with our clients to help them understand the risks in cybersecurity and minimize the attack surfaces in their business environment.
As shared by Ilana, a strong password is one of the most basic measures you can take to secure your online accounts and significantly decrease the likelihood of being hacked by a malicious actor. However, did you know that having a complex password with upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols is not enough if you don’t use a lot of characters? Another important tip to remember is to be mindful of phishing emails, which look like legitimate emails. The goal of this type of attack is to lure you into a malicious action, like clicking on a link or downloading a file that then drops malware into your systems and enables an intruder to gain access to your online accounts.
